Maple Leafs Give $6 Million Player ‘Permission to Talk’ to Teams: Report

Timothy Liljegren, a former first-round pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs, has been given the opportunity to explore trade options, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Despite not receiving an official statement from Toronto, Liljegren has reportedly been frustrated by his diminished role within the team and is now allowed to engage with other NHL teams to assess potential interest. His playing time has decreased, even after a coaching change and the arrival of Craig Berube.

Friedman shared on “Hockey Night in Canada” that Toronto is “preaching patience” with Liljegren, suggesting that they aren’t ruling out him staying with the team. However, Liljegren, at 25, wants more regular playing time, and Toronto’s current depth at defense, including players like Conor Timmins, has made it challenging for him to secure a consistent role.

Josh Wegman of The Score speculated on possible destinations for Liljegren, naming the Pittsburgh Penguins as a prime candidate, while also mentioning the Los Angeles Kings, Florida Panthers, Edmonton Oilers, and Dallas Stars as other possible landing spots. Liljegren, who signed a two-year, $6 million contract with Toronto in June, has contributed 14 goals and 51 assists in 196 games for the Maple Leafs .
