Former Haas team boss Guenther Steiner has expressed his belief that FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem involves himself too much in the day-to-day operations of Formula 1. This comes in the wake of the “swearing saga” involving Max Verstappen, who was penalized for using foul language during an FIA press conference. Ben Sulayem had previously called for less swearing on F1’s TV broadcasts, suggesting drivers should take responsibility for their language.
Steiner, who has known Ben Sulayem for a long time, said he likes him personally but thinks the FIA president should delegate more and not get involved in such details. He also commented on Verstappen’s penalty, suggesting that a simple, direct conversation with the drivers about toning down their language would have been more effective than handing out fines or punishments.
Steiner emphasized that emotion is a key part of sport and that swearing is sometimes an understandable reaction in the high-pressure environment of F1. He believes the controversy surrounding Verstappen’s comments was overblown, noting that seeing drivers’ emotions is what makes the sport exciting for fans. Several drivers, including Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris, have also supported Verstappen, saying they disagreed with the punishment.
