Celtic has decided to opt out of an SPFL contract that would have allowed Premier Sports to broadcast additional Scottish Premiership games live, including their upcoming match against Aberdeen on October 19. This decision means that the game will not be televised, and the original 3pm kick-off time will remain in place.
By rejecting the deal, Celtic has turned down an opportunity to earn a minimum of £75,000 per home game, with a maximum potential revenue of £150,000 if two games at Celtic Park were broadcast. According to reports, the club made this choice to avoid inconveniencing season ticket holders and fans who make travel arrangements to attend matches in person.
Celtic’s stance seems to be a response to the growing frustration among supporters over frequent fixture changes to accommodate broadcasters. This season, several of Celtic’s games have already been rescheduled for Sky Sports, limiting the number of traditional 3pm Saturday kick-offs, which are popular among fans.
While this decision might result in a financial loss, it is expected to be well-received by season ticket holders and supporters who prefer the consistency of fixed kick-off times.
