The Toronto Maple Leafs and Nick Robertson seem to have finally found common ground. Robertson’s journey since July 30, through training camp, has been a true rollercoaster. However, it’s clear that his efforts, including requesting a trade and ultimately signing a one-year contract extension, have paid off. Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed that Robertson will be part of the team’s final roster for the 2024–25 season, positioned in the bottom-six forward group.
“I knew Robertson was skilled, fast, and had a great shot,” Berube said before the Leafs’ final exhibition game, via the *Toronto Sun’s* Terry Koshan. “What really surprised me was his work ethic and competitiveness, which have been outstanding. That’s what will make him a very good player in this league.” Robertson’s preseason performances, including a two-goal outing against the Detroit Red Wings, solidified his spot on the roster after a summer full of speculation about his future. Despite suffering an upper-body injury late in camp, Robertson remained optimistic about being ready for the season opener against the Montreal Canadiens on October 9.
Reflecting on his first NHL season-opening roster, Robertson said, “Just the anticipation, especially in Montreal, it’s going to be exciting. It’s my job to carry that into the season,” via *TSN’s* Mark Masters. Last season, Robertson recorded 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points in 56 games, but this season will be another proving ground for him as he’s under contract only for the 2024-25 season.
Leafs general manager Brad Treliving also praised Robertson’s well-rounded play throughout camp, particularly his defensive work and penalty-killing ability. “He’s been strong defensively, scoring goals, and his speed has been excellent,” Treliving said on *Sportsnet 590 The FAN*. “He’s responsible on both ends, which is great to see.”
