The Toronto Blue Jays are shifting Don Mattingly to a “traditional role” as a full-time bench coach for the 2025 season, general manager Ross Atkins announced on Wednesday.

Mattingly previously served as Toronto’s offensive coordinator this past season.

“He’s excited about the opportunity to impact us and (manager John Schneider) in a different and more significant way,” Atkins said during the end-of-season press conference. “We hold Donnie in high regard. He’s been incredible and open to change.”

Atkins also revealed that the team has parted ways with hitting coach Guillermo Martinez, and that field coordinator Gil Kim and assistant pitching coach Jeff Ware will not return to the major league team for 2025.

Ware, who remains under contract, will be offered a new role, while Kim, who is not under contract, will also be offered a different position, according to Atkins.

Mattingly has a managerial record of 889-950 from his tenures with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-15) and Miami Marlins (2016-22). He also won the American League MVP in 1985 while playing for the New York Yankees.
