Everton’s decision to sell Antonee Robinson in 2020 for just £2 million to Wigan Athletic now looks like a massive misstep, especially as the American full-back has become one of the top-performing players in his position in the Premier League. Robinson has developed significantly since leaving Everton, now starring for Fulham in the Premier League and drawing attention from major clubs, including Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Manchester United, in particular, are reportedly considering a move for him but may hesitate to meet Fulham’s £40 million valuation .
At the time of his sale, Everton had other options at left-back, such as Lucas Digne and the recently acquired Niels Nkounkou, making Robinson seem expendable. However, both Digne and Nkounkou have since left the club, and Everton are currently struggling with limited options in that position, with Vitaliy Mykolenko being the only fit senior left-back. Robinson’s prowess, both offensively and defensively, has grown dramatically. He ranks in the top percentages for assists, tackles, interceptions, and clearances among European full-backs .
This sale has come back to haunt Everton, with manager Sean Dyche likely wishing he had the modern, well-rounded full-back in his squad today. Carlo Ancelotti, who made the decision to let Robinson go, did not anticipate how vital Robinson would become in the Premier League .
