“The worst” – Leeds United: Ally McCoist reacts live on air to Ethan Ampadu news

Leeds United have been dealt a major setback with the news that captain Ethan Ampadu will be sidelined until January 2025 due to a knee ligament injury sustained in their recent win over Coventry City. Ampadu, who has been instrumental for Leeds since his £7 million move from Chelsea in 2023, picked up the injury in a challenge with Coventry midfielder Ben Sheaf, forcing him off before halftime.

Ally McCoist reacted to the news, describing it as a “nightmare” and expressing concern over the growing number of serious injuries like this in football, particularly ligament damage. Ampadu’s absence is a significant blow for Leeds, as the Welsh international has been a key figure in both defense and midfield under manager Daniel Farke. Appointed captain after Liam Cooper’s departure, Ampadu’s leadership and versatility have been crucial for Leeds’ push to challenge at the top of the Championship this season.

Although the injury won’t require surgery, the recovery will take at least 10 weeks, leaving Leeds without their captain for a critical period. Ampadu’s consistent presence—having started all eight of Leeds’ matches this season—will be sorely missed. His performances last season, which earned him a place in both the Championship and PFA Team of the Season, made him an indispensable part of Farke’s plans .
