Fernando Alonso Nears Crucial Decision on Formula 1 Future Amid Aston Ma… read more 👇 full details in the comments

As the 2026 Formula 1 season progresses, speculation continues to grow around the future of two-time world champion Fernando Alonso. The Spanish veteran, who remains one of the most respected and accomplished drivers in motorsport, is reportedly getting closer to making a final decision on whether he will continue racing in Formula 1 beyond the current season.

At 44 years old, Alonso is already the most experienced driver in F1 history, arriving at the Austrian Grand Prix with an incredible 432 race starts to his name. Despite his age, his passion for competition remains clear, but the question of whether he will continue for another season is becoming increasingly important as the summer break approaches.

Earlier in the year, Alonso suggested that his future would largely depend on the competitiveness of Aston Martin. He indicated that if the team produced a car capable of fighting near the front of the grid, he could consider ending his Formula 1 career on a high note. However, he also admitted that if the team failed to make significant progress, he might be tempted to stay longer in the sport in the hope of achieving better results.

Unfortunately for Alonso, Aston Martin’s 2026 campaign has been far from successful. The team has struggled throughout the opening races of the season, collecting only a single championship point after seven rounds. Numerous technical difficulties have affected their performance, including concerns surrounding the chassis and power unit package supplied by Honda.

The disappointing results have left Aston Martin well behind many of their rivals, creating a difficult environment for a driver who has spent his career competing at the highest level. Despite the challenges, there remains optimism within the team thanks to the influence of legendary designer Adrian Newey, who joined the project with the goal of transforming Aston Martin into a championship contender.

Newey is believed to be preparing a significant upgrade package that could arrive later in the season. The improvements are expected to play an important role in Alonso’s final decision regarding his future. If the upgrades show genuine promise, they could convince him that Aston Martin is moving in the right direction and that staying for another year would be worthwhile.

According to respected Formula 1 journalist Lawrence Barretto, Alonso is currently leaning toward continuing his F1 career beyond the end of the season. While no final decision has been made, reports suggest that the Spaniard still feels he has unfinished business in the sport.

However, the prospect of spending another season driving an uncompetitive car remains a major concern. Alonso has repeatedly demonstrated that his motivation comes from fighting at the front and competing for meaningful results. Remaining stuck in the midfield—or worse—could make retirement a more attractive option.

Should Alonso decide to continue racing in 2027, another fascinating question emerges: which team will he represent?

Although Aston Martin holds an option to retain his services, rumors have linked Alonso with a surprising return to Alpine. Such a move would mark yet another chapter in a relationship that has already spanned multiple periods throughout his Formula 1 career.

Alonso first raced for the Enstone-based team when it competed under the Renault banner, winning both of his world championships in 2005 and 2006. He later returned for another stint between 2008 and 2009 before leaving to join Ferrari. More recently, he made a successful comeback with Alpine in 2021 and remained there for two seasons before moving to Aston Martin.

A potential return would also reunite Alonso with Flavio Briatore, the influential figure who played a key role in his championship-winning years and has remained one of his closest advisors throughout his career. Their long-standing relationship could become a significant factor if Alpine pursues the veteran driver.

For now, Alonso’s focus remains on extracting the maximum performance from Aston Martin. Yet as the season unfolds, the motorsport world eagerly awaits what could be one of the biggest driver decisions of the year—whether the legendary Spaniard chooses one final chapter in Formula 1 or decides that the time has finally come to step away from the grid.
