JUST IN: Lewis Hamilton Handed Major F1 Title Boost as FIA Poised for Immediate Mercedes…read more

Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 title hopes could receive a significant boost after reports suggested the FIA is preparing to make an immediate ruling on the controversial Mercedes diffuser that has sparked debate across the paddock.

The seven-time world champion returned to the top step of the podium at the Spanish Grand Prix, ending a 686-day victory drought with his first full-distance race win in Ferrari colours. The triumph has reignited discussions about Hamilton’s chances in the 2026 championship battle.

Although Mercedes have dominated the season so far, winning every other Grand Prix on the calendar, Hamilton has quietly climbed to second place in the drivers’ standings. The Brit now trails championship leader Kimi Antonelli by just 41 points after a string of impressive performances.

FIA Set to Rule on Mercedes Diffuser Controversy

Hamilton’s title challenge could gain further momentum as Italian media reports claim the FIA is considering a ban on Mercedes’ innovative diffuser design, potentially as early as this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.

Mercedes introduced a major upgrade package at the Canadian Grand Prix despite already establishing themselves as the benchmark team under Formula 1’s new regulations. Central to those upgrades was a distinctive diffuser featuring serrated edges along its upper section — a concept unlike anything seen elsewhere on the grid.

While rival teams had previously experimented with extending the diffuser’s outer sections, Mercedes took a different approach by extending the upper area and adding an extra flow deflector to the waterfall section.

The design quickly drew attention from competitors, particularly Ferrari. Reports suggest the Scuderia had explored a similar concept before allegedly being prevented from pursuing it after discussions with the FIA during pre-season inspections.

Ferrari subsequently sought further clarification from Formula 1’s governing body regarding the legality of Mercedes’ latest aerodynamic innovation.

Decision Expected Before Austrian Grand Prix

According to Italian outlet AutoRacer.it, the long-running dispute could soon be resolved.

The publication reported that after weeks of technical discussions and requests for clarification, the FIA could deliver a definitive verdict before racing begins at the Red Bull Ring.

An official decision is expected in the days leading up to the Austrian Grand Prix, with the possibility that new technical guidance could be introduced in time for Round 8 of the 2026 Formula 1 season.

Should the FIA rule against the design, Mercedes could be forced to modify or abandon the diffuser, potentially reducing their competitive advantage and opening the door for rivals such as Hamilton and Ferrari to close the gap in both championships.

Austrian Grand Prix Schedule

The Austrian Grand Prix weekend begins on Friday, June 26, with Free Practice 1 starting at 1:30pm local time (CEST).

Qualifying takes place on Saturday, June 27, at 4:00pm CEST, while the Grand Prix itself gets underway on Sunday, June 28, with lights out scheduled for 3:00pm CEST at the Red Bull Ring.
