George Russell to hold talks with Mercedes after Lewis Hamilton thrashing at Barcelona GP
Mercedes driver George Russell is set to hold discussions with his team following a frustrating outcome at the Barcelona Grand Prix, where he was beaten by former Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton.
Russell started the race from pole position and initially looked well placed to challenge for victory. However, Ferrari’s aggressive strategy with Hamilton proved decisive. The seven-time world champion adopted a three-stop approach that allowed him to maintain stronger pace throughout the race and eventually take control of the Grand Prix.
Following the race, Russell questioned several strategic decisions made by Mercedes, particularly the timing of his first pit stop. The Briton revealed that he did not fully agree with the team’s approach and plans to review the race in detail with engineers to understand why certain calls were made.
According to Russell, Mercedes reacted to Hamilton’s early pit stop by bringing him in soon afterwards, a move that ultimately shaped the remainder of his race. While Hamilton continued on a three-stop strategy, Mercedes committed Russell to a two-stop plan, leaving him vulnerable as the Ferrari driver enjoyed fresher tyres in the closing stages.
Hamilton’s pace, combined with a well-timed Virtual Safety Car period, helped him move ahead and secure his first victory since joining Ferrari. Russell admitted there are lessons for Mercedes to learn and indicated that conversations with the team will focus on whether alternative strategic choices could have delivered a different result.
Despite his disappointment, Russell still collected a valuable second-place finish, ending a difficult run of recent races and strengthening his position in the championship standings. However, the Barcelona weekend left him wondering whether Mercedes could have challenged Hamilton more effectively had they pursued a different strategy.
Team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged after the race that strategy played a major role in the outcome, while also recognising Hamilton’s impressive speed throughout the event. The result marked Mercedes’ first defeat of the season and highlighted the growing challenge posed by Ferrari as the championship battle intensifies.
With the next round approaching, Russell and Mercedes will be eager to understand exactly where the race slipped away. Their post-race discussions could prove crucial as the team looks to respond to Ferrari’s resurgence and prevent Hamilton from gaining further momentum in the title fight.
