2026 Barcelona Grand Prix starting grid with penalties applied… see details in comment

The grid is set for the 2026 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with Mercedes leading the field after an impressive qualifying performance from George Russell.

Russell delivered a superb lap when it mattered most to secure pole position for Sunday’s race, giving himself the best possible chance of converting qualifying pace into victory. The Mercedes driver will start ahead of a highly competitive field as he looks to close the gap in the championship standings.

History suggests pole position could prove crucial in Barcelona. The circuit has traditionally rewarded drivers who start from the front, with the majority of previous races at the venue being won from pole. That statistic will provide encouragement for Russell as he prepares for one of the most important races of the season.

Alongside Russell on the front row will be seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who continues to impress in his Ferrari machinery. Hamilton’s strong qualifying effort earned him second place on the grid and places him in an excellent position to challenge for victory when the lights go out.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli will start from third position. The young Mercedes star arrives in Spain with tremendous momentum after securing his fifth consecutive Grand Prix victory at Monaco. That remarkable winning streak has allowed Antonelli to build a commanding advantage at the top of the drivers’ championship, making him the man to beat in the title race.

The battle at the front promises to be intense, with the top three drivers in the championship also occupying the top three places on the starting grid. The long run to the first corner at Barcelona is expected to provide immediate drama as Russell, Hamilton and Antonelli fight for track position.

The second row features McLaren’s Lando Norris in fourth place, while reigning world champion Max Verstappen lines up fifth for Red Bull. Verstappen will be hoping to make quick progress and insert himself into the fight for victory despite missing out on a front-row start.

Red Bull newcomer Isack Hadjar impressed once again by qualifying sixth, continuing his strong performances throughout the season. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri will begin from seventh, while Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson secured eighth position.

Completing the top ten are Audi’s experienced driver Nico Hulkenberg in ninth and Ferrari star Charles Leclerc in tenth. Leclerc endured a difficult qualifying session and will face a challenging race if he hopes to fight his way toward the podium positions.

Further down the order, Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad starts 11th, ahead of Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto. Alpine teammates Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly line up 13th and 14th respectively.

The Haas pairing of Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon will start from 15th and 17th, separated by Williams driver Carlos Sainz in 16th. Williams teammate Alex Albon begins from 18th position.

At the back of the field, Cadillac drivers Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas occupy 19th and 20th places. Aston Martin endured a disappointing qualifying session, leaving home favourite Fernando Alonso and teammate Lance Stroll on the final row of the grid.

With Mercedes locking out two of the top three positions and Hamilton ready to challenge from second, all eyes will be on the race start. Whether Russell can convert pole position into victory or Antonelli can continue his remarkable winning streak remains one of the biggest questions heading into the Spanish Grand Prix. The stage is set for an intriguing battle at the front as Formula 1 returns to action in Barcelona.
