Dean Whitehead’s return to Stoke City has been a welcome surprise for many, including sporting director Jon Walters. Whitehead, who was part of Stoke’s FA Cup final team in 2011 and played a key role in their Premier League success under Tony Pulis, has enjoyed a diverse coaching career, having worked at clubs like Besiktas and Barnsley. Walters explained that Narcis Pelach, Stoke’s head coach, was the one who suggested bringing Whitehead back to the club, a decision Walters supported due to his familiarity with Whitehead and his impressive coaching background.
Whitehead’s commitment is evident, especially with his previous stint in Turkey while his family remained in England. His return to Stoke has been met positively, with Walters noting that Whitehead is happy to be back at the club where he contributed to its success in the past.
In addition to Whitehead, Joel Dawson, a sports scientist with deep ties to the club, has been retained in a key role following the departure of Elliot Turner. Dawson, who briefly left Stoke for a position at Manchester City, returned to lead sports science in the academy. Now, he has been brought into the senior team to work closely with Pelach, further strengthening the backroom staff. Walters praised Dawson’s expertise and the important influence he will have on the head coach.
