Mercedes sensation Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship after delivering a composed and commanding victory in a dramatic Monaco Grand Prix that featured safety cars, a red flag, multiple penalties and several high-profile retirements.
The Italian teenager converted pole position into his fifth consecutive victory of the season, becoming the youngest winner in Monaco Grand Prix history. Despite seeing a comfortable advantage wiped out by late-race interruptions, Antonelli remained calm under immense pressure and successfully defended the lead following a standing restart to secure another memorable triumph.
The race took a dramatic turn when Lance Stroll crashed and triggered a safety car period. During the caution, Mercedes driver George Russell failed to correctly serve an earlier five-second penalty for pit-lane speeding. The mistake resulted in a drive-through penalty that ultimately dropped him out of the points and dealt a significant blow to his championship ambitions.
Further chaos followed when hometown favourite Charles Leclerc crashed on the restart, bringing out a red flag after damage to the circuit surface required urgent repairs. Once racing resumed, Antonelli absorbed intense pressure from Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who pushed hard in the closing laps but could not find a way past the race leader. Hamilton settled for second place, extending his run of strong results and moving into second position in the championship standings.
The battle for the final podium position was settled after post-race penalties were applied. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly crossed the finish line in third but received two separate five-second penalties for pit-lane speeding infringements, dropping him to seventh. That promoted Red Bull rookie Isack Hadjar to a well-earned third-place finish. Alpine have since requested a Right of Review from the FIA regarding Gasly’s penalties.
