Ferrari Star’s Challenge Suffers Blow as FIA Hands Out Series of Penalties in Monte Carlo

The FIA handed seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton a five-second time penalty during the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix after exceeding the pit lane speed limit, dealing a significant setback to his hopes of challenging for victory in the prestigious race.

Hamilton had been running second behind Mercedes rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli and was attempting to gain a strategic advantage through the pit stops. The Ferrari driver dived into the pits hoping to undercut the race leader, but his efforts were compromised when race control placed the incident under investigation for a pit lane speeding infringement.

The stewards quickly reached a verdict, confirming that Hamilton had exceeded the speed limit and issuing a five-second penalty. While the punishment initially threatened to damage his race result, the Briton was able to serve the penalty during a later safety car period on lap 61, minimising the overall impact.

Multiple Drivers Caught Out

Hamilton was far from the only driver to fall foul of the regulations in Monte Carlo.

Just laps after Ferrari’s setback, Mercedes contender George Russell was also handed a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. The sanction came at a particularly difficult moment for Russell, who entered the weekend trailing team-mate Antonelli by 43 points in the drivers’ championship after the Italian’s remarkable run of four consecutive victories.

Russell’s Monaco weekend had already been complicated by a disappointing qualifying performance that left him starting sixth, while Antonelli secured pole position.

The list of offenders continued to grow as Franco Colapinto received an identical five-second penalty, prompting former F1 driver and commentator Martin Brundle to question whether a change in the pit lane timing line may have contributed to the unusually high number of speeding violations.

FIA Busy as Penalties Mount

The wave of penalties did not stop there. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll were all subsequently penalised for the same offence.

The extraordinary number of pit lane speeding infringements became one of the major talking points of the Monaco Grand Prix, with teams and drivers facing increased scrutiny over their pit entry procedures around the tight and unforgiving streets of Monte Carlo.

For Hamilton, the penalty added another layer of drama to an already intense afternoon, as Ferrari sought to convert strong pace into a result against the rapidly emerging threat posed by Antonelli and Mercedes in the 2026 championship battle.
