Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has made a welcome return to the Formula 1 paddock after spending time under medical observation during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend.
The 58-year-old Frenchman was forced to miss Saturday’s track activities, including the final practice session and qualifying, after being taken to a local medical facility for precautionary checks. Ferrari confirmed his absence in a statement released ahead of Saturday’s running, explaining that Vasseur would remain under observation following medical examinations.
The Italian team chose not to reveal further details regarding his condition, instead focusing on his recovery and expressing optimism that he would soon be back with the squad. The announcement naturally raised concerns among Ferrari supporters and members of the Formula 1 community, given Vasseur’s key role in leading one of the sport’s most famous teams.
Fortunately, those concerns have now eased.
Ahead of Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix, reports emerged confirming that Vasseur had been discharged and had returned to the Ferrari garage. Formula 1 presenter Lawrence Barretto shared the positive update on social media, stating that the Ferrari boss was back at the circuit after missing Saturday’s action while undergoing medical observation.
His return provides a significant boost for Ferrari as the team prepares for one of the most prestigious races on the Formula 1 calendar. The Monaco Grand Prix remains one of the crown jewels of the championship, and having Vasseur back on the pit wall will be a welcome sight for Ferrari’s drivers, engineers and fans.
Despite the encouraging health update, Ferrari heads into the race facing a challenging task after falling short in qualifying. The Scuderia entered Saturday as one of the favourites for pole position after showing impressive pace during the opening practice sessions around the streets of Monte Carlo.
Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc appeared capable of challenging for the front row, with Ferrari looking strong throughout the weekend. However, when it mattered most in qualifying, the team was unable to convert that speed into pole position.
Instead, Mercedes sensation Kimi Antonelli delivered a stunning performance to secure pole position, while reigning world champion Max Verstappen also produced a strong lap to claim a place ahead of Ferrari’s drivers on the grid.
As a result, Hamilton will start Sunday’s race from third position, while home favourite Leclerc lines up fourth. Although those grid positions still leave Ferrari in contention for a podium finish and potentially even victory, they represent a disappointment considering the expectations generated by the team’s earlier pace.
Monaco’s narrow layout makes overtaking extremely difficult, placing enormous importance on qualifying performance. That reality means Ferrari faces a tough challenge if it hopes to overcome Antonelli and Verstappen during the 78-lap race.
Nevertheless, the biggest positive story for Ferrari on race day is undoubtedly the return of Vasseur. After a worrying health scare threatened to overshadow the weekend, the team principal is back where he belongs, leading Ferrari’s charge in Formula 1’s most iconic race.
