A Shocking Shift at Mercedes as Wolff issued warning to Russell over… see details 👇👇👇

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has expressed concern over George Russell’s disappointing performance at the 2026 Monaco Grand Prix, admitting that the British driver has been struggling with confidence throughout the weekend.

Russell entered the 2026 Formula 1 season as one of the leading contenders for the world championship after securing a brilliant victory at the opening race in Australia. Many believed the 28-year-old was finally ready to challenge for his maiden F1 title following several impressive seasons with Mercedes.

However, the championship battle has taken a dramatic turn over the past few months. Russell’s young teammate, Kimi Antonelli, has emerged as the standout performer on the grid. The Italian sensation has won the last four consecutive races and established a commanding 43-point advantage over Russell in the drivers’ standings.

Hoping to stop Antonelli’s momentum, Russell arrived in Monaco determined to produce a strong result. Instead, the weekend proved frustrating from the very beginning. While Antonelli continued his remarkable form by securing pole position, Russell could only manage sixth place during qualifying.

Starting from the third row of the grid presents a major challenge at Monaco, a circuit famous for its narrow streets and limited overtaking opportunities. As a result, Russell faces an uphill battle if he hopes to recover positions during the race and prevent Antonelli from extending his championship lead even further.

Speaking after qualifying, Wolff explained that Russell never felt comfortable behind the wheel and struggled to build confidence as the weekend progressed.

According to the Mercedes boss, the problems began during the practice sessions and continued into qualifying. Although Russell had shown some encouraging pace earlier in the weekend, he gradually lost confidence in the car, making it increasingly difficult to extract maximum performance when it mattered most.

Wolff suggested that Russell’s struggles were not necessarily due to a lack of ability but rather a lack of trust in the car’s grip levels. At a circuit like Monaco, where drivers must push to the absolute limit while brushing barriers at high speed, confidence is crucial. Without sufficient grip, drivers are unable to attack corners aggressively, costing valuable lap time.

The Austrian team principal also hinted that an additional practice session might have helped Russell regain confidence and find more performance. Nevertheless, by the time qualifying arrived, the deficit was too large to overcome.

Meanwhile, Antonelli delivered yet another outstanding performance. The young Mercedes driver produced a stunning pole lap that narrowly beat reigning champion Max Verstappen. The gap between the two was just four hundredths of a second, highlighting the incredible precision of Antonelli’s effort.

The pole position marked Antonelli’s fourth pole in the last five races, further demonstrating his growing dominance during the 2026 campaign. It also places him in an excellent position to secure a fifth consecutive race victory and strengthen his grip on the championship.

What makes Antonelli’s rise even more remarkable is how quickly his fortunes have changed. Just one year ago, at the 2025 Monaco Grand Prix, he finished at the back of the field among the remaining runners. Now, he is leading the championship and regularly outperforming some of the sport’s biggest names.

With every race, Antonelli appears increasingly likely to make history. If he maintains his current form, he could become Formula 1’s youngest-ever world champion. He is also on course to become Italy’s first F1 world champion since Alberto Ascari achieved the feat in 1953.

As the season progresses, the contrast between the two Mercedes drivers continues to grow. While Antonelli’s confidence and results keep improving, Russell faces mounting pressure to reverse his decline and reignite his championship challenge before the gap becomes impossible to close.
