F1 Insider Suggests Antonelli Went Too Far in Battle With Russell
An F1 insider has claimed that rising Mercedes star Kimi Antonelli may have crossed the line during his fierce on-track fight with team-mate George Russell earlier this season.
After the opening five races of the 2026 Formula 1 campaign, the battle inside Mercedes has become one of the biggest talking points in the sport. What many expected to be George Russell’s year has quickly transformed into a stunning breakthrough season for Antonelli, who currently leads his experienced team-mate by 43 points ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix.
At the beginning of the year, Russell appeared to be the clear favourite to lead Mercedes’ title challenge. Having spent several seasons developing into a consistent frontrunner, many believed the British driver would comfortably establish himself as the squad’s number one. However, Antonelli’s rapid rise has completely changed the picture.
The teenage sensation has impressed with his fearless driving style and remarkable pace, putting himself firmly into championship contention. Russell himself has even admitted that the momentum has shifted, with Antonelli now looking like the stronger contender within the Silver Arrows camp.
Their rivalry reached another level during the Canadian Grand Prix, where the pair engaged in an intense wheel-to-wheel battle that nearly ended in disaster. Neither driver was willing to back down, resulting in several tense moments as the Mercedes duo fought aggressively for position during the opening stages of the race.
Russell initially managed to stay ahead and looked set to keep his championship hopes alive. However, his race ended in disappointment after he was forced to retire, opening the door for Antonelli to take victory. The win not only boosted the young Italian’s confidence but also handed him a crucial 25-point advantage in the standings.
The dramatic duel between the two Mercedes drivers has sparked debate among fans and experts alike, with some questioning whether Antonelli’s aggressive approach has gone too far.
Former broadcaster and Drive to Survive personality Will Buxton shared his thoughts on the situation during an appearance on the Up To Speed podcast. According to Buxton, Antonelli’s exciting style is part of what makes him such a thrilling driver to watch, but he believes the youngster occasionally pushes beyond acceptable limits.
Buxton explained that Antonelli still has “rough edges” in his racecraft, which can make him unpredictable on track. While that aggression has helped him achieve impressive results, it has also created moments where the young driver appears to exceed the boundaries expected between team-mates.
The F1 insider suggested that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff may have growing concerns about the situation. With both drivers racing each other so closely, the possibility of costly crashes becomes a serious issue for the team.
Modern Formula 1 operates under strict budget cap regulations, meaning excessive crash damage can significantly impact a team’s ability to develop the car throughout the season. Any collision between Russell and Antonelli could therefore have major consequences not only for their title ambitions, but also for Mercedes’ overall competitiveness.
Attention now turns to the Monaco Grand Prix, where the narrow streets of Monte Carlo provide very little room for mistakes. The tight circuit is unlikely to allow the same type of wheel-to-wheel action seen in Canada, but tensions between the two Mercedes drivers are still expected to remain high.
There are also doubts over whether Mercedes will have the outright pace to dominate in Monaco, with several rival teams expected to challenge strongly around the famous street circuit. Even so, the internal rivalry at Mercedes could once again steal the spotlight.
As the championship battle intensifies, both Russell and Antonelli know that every point matters. Neither driver appears willing to give up any advantage, and their determination to secure a maiden world title is only increasing the pressure inside the team.
With the season still in its early stages, the rivalry between the two Mercedes stars could become one of the defining stories of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
