F1 2027 Driver Market Explodes as Five Major Teams Face Huge Decisions
The Formula 1 grid for 2027 is already beginning to take shape, but uncertainty surrounding several superstar drivers means the biggest transfer battle in years could soon erupt across the paddock.
Five of the sport’s leading teams — Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, Scuderia Ferrari, McLaren Formula 1 Team, Oracle Red Bull Racing and BWT Alpine Formula One Team — are all dealing with major contract situations that could reshape the championship landscape.
Mercedes finally ended months of speculation after securing both George Russell and teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli on fresh contracts. While the agreements officially cover only the short term, many inside the paddock expect extension clauses to be triggered if the duo continue their impressive performances throughout the 2026 campaign. Mercedes team bosses are believed to see the pair as the foundation of their next title challenge.
At Ferrari, attention remains firmly fixed on seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. The British star recently confirmed that his Ferrari deal runs through to the end of 2027, ending widespread uncertainty over the duration of his blockbuster move from Mercedes. Alongside him, Charles Leclerc remains contracted until 2028, although reports suggest performance-based exit clauses could become important if Ferrari struggle under the new regulations.
McLaren currently appear to have the most stable line-up on the grid. Reigning world champion Lando Norris is tied down until at least 2027, while team-mate Oscar Piastri has a deal running until 2028. The Woking-based team’s strong performances and internal stability have made them one of the most attractive destinations in Formula 1.
However, the biggest mystery remains at Red Bull. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen continues to be linked with a potential exit despite still being under contract. Rumours surrounding Red Bull’s long-term competitiveness and Verstappen’s frustrations have intensified speculation that rival teams could attempt a sensational move for the Dutchman. Youngster Isack Hadjar is also awaiting clarity after initially receiving only a short-term deal.
Meanwhile, Alpine have quietly become one of the surprise stories of the season. Franco Colapinto strengthened his position after an impressive run of performances, including a standout result in Canada, while experienced team leader Pierre Gasly is already secured until 2028.
With regulation changes continuing to influence team performance, several contracts containing hidden clauses, and superstar futures still unresolved, the 2027 Formula 1 driver market could soon trigger one of the biggest shake-ups the sport has seen in years.
