McLaren driver has admitted he made the wrong call after a risky tyre strategy ruined the team’s hopes at the Canadian Grand Prix. What began as an ambitious attempt to gain an early advantage quickly turned into a nightmare weekend for the Woking-based outfit, with both Norris and team-mate leaving Montreal empty-handed.

The reigning world champion failed to finish the race after suffering a major mechanical issue midway through the event. Norris was forced to pull off the circuit on lap 40 after reporting a gearbox problem over team radio, ending any slim chance of salvaging points from a difficult afternoon.

Piastri’s race also unraveled in dramatic fashion. The Australian crossed the line outside the points in 11th place after colliding with . The incident caused damage to Piastri’s rear wing and earned him a 10-second penalty for causing the collision, further compounding McLaren’s frustrations.

However, the team’s troubles actually began before the race had properly started. McLaren stood out on the grid after making the bold decision to fit intermediate tyres on both cars while most rivals chose slick tyres for the damp-but-drying conditions. It was a gamble that immediately attracted attention and ultimately proved costly.

Team principal later defended the strategy, explaining that unexpected extra formation laps altered the track conditions. Those additional laps occurred after rookie driver stalled on the grid and could not get his car moving, giving the circuit more time to dry before the race officially began.

According to Stella, McLaren believed the intermediate tyres would provide an advantage if the track remained wet enough during the opening laps. Instead, the changing conditions quickly worked against them.

Despite the team boss attempting to justify the call, Norris chose to shoulder the responsibility himself. Speaking after the race, the British driver openly admitted that choosing intermediates had been the wrong move.

When asked whether he had noticed signs of the gearbox issue earlier in the race, Norris responded with humor despite his disappointment.

“No, something just went boom,” he joked, trying to laugh off the frustrating retirement.

The 26-year-old at least managed to enjoy one brief positive moment during the chaotic race. Thanks to the grip advantage off the line, Norris launched from third on the grid into the race lead heading into the opening corner.

“That was the best bit,” he admitted afterward.

Still, the excitement was short-lived as the tyre gamble quickly backfired. Norris acknowledged that the strategy simply did not suit the conditions once the rain eased off.

“It wasn’t the right decision,” he said. “If there had been a little more rain, it could have worked perfectly for us, but there just wasn’t enough.”

Norris also revealed that the call had largely been his own, showing accountability for the failed approach rather than shifting blame elsewhere within the team.

“It was kind of my decision,” he explained. “Looking back now, it was obviously the wrong choice, but sometimes these risks can win you races just as easily as they can ruin them.”

Despite the disappointment, Norris maintained a surprisingly upbeat attitude. Rather than dwelling on what might have been, he suggested that retiring from the back of the field felt less painful than suffering the same mechanical failure while fighting for victory at the front.

“In a strange way, I’m happier the car failed while I was further back rather than leading the race,” he said. “That’s racing sometimes. Things happen and you move on.”

The disastrous weekend leaves McLaren searching for answers after a race filled with strategic mistakes, collisions, and reliability problems. With rivals continuing to gain momentum early in the 2026 Formula 1 season, the team will now be desperate to bounce back quickly before their championship ambitions slip even further away.
