2026 F1 Standings: Antonelli Extends Championship Lead After Dramatic Canadian Grand..read more
The 2026 Formula One season took another dramatic twist at the Canadian Grand Prix as teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the world championship with a fourth consecutive victory for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.
Heading into the Montreal weekend, Antonelli’s lead over team-mate George Russell had already been reduced following a tense Sprint race on Saturday. During that contest, the two Mercedes drivers battled aggressively for the lead, with Antonelli briefly colliding with Russell while attempting an overtake. The Italian lost momentum after running off track and eventually surrendered second place to Lando Norris.
That result trimmed Antonelli’s championship advantage to just 18 points before Sunday’s main race, raising hopes that Russell could mount a serious comeback in the title fight.
However, the Canadian Grand Prix itself delivered heartbreak for Russell and further glory for Antonelli.
Russell started from pole position after a superb qualifying performance and immediately found himself locked in another fierce battle with his young team-mate. The Mercedes pair exchanged positions several times during the opening stages as both drivers pushed to the limit around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
But the race changed dramatically when Russell suffered a reliability failure midway through the Grand Prix. The British driver was forced to retire after reporting power unit issues, ending what had looked like a potential victory challenge.
Antonelli capitalised immediately, taking full control of the race and calmly guiding his Mercedes to another victory. At just 19 years old, the Italian continues to rewrite Formula One history, becoming the first Italian driver since Alberto Ascari to win four consecutive races.
Behind him, Lewis Hamilton produced one of his strongest performances since joining Scuderia Ferrari, securing second place after an intense late-race duel with Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver completed the podium in third, claiming his first top-three finish of the campaign.
The result had a major impact on the championship standings.
Antonelli now leads the Drivers’ Championship with 131 points, while Russell remains second on 88 after failing to score in Canada. Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Hamilton sit third and fourth respectively, with Norris completing the top five despite retiring from the race.
Top Five Drivers’ Standings After Canada
1. Kimi Antonelli – 131 points
2. George Russell – 88 points
3. Charles Leclerc – 75 points
4. Lewis Hamilton – 72 points
5. Lando Norris – 58 points
Mercedes also strengthened their lead in the Constructors’ Championship thanks to Antonelli’s victory, continuing what has been a dominant start to the 2026 season.
With four straight victories and momentum firmly on his side, Antonelli is rapidly emerging as the clear favourite for the 2026 world title. But with many races still remaining and rival teams improving steadily, the championship battle is far from over.
