Mercedes Celebrate Nürburgring Triumph Despite Verstappen… read more
Four-time Formula 1 world champion endured a frustrating end to his Nürburgring 24 Hours campaign after a mechanical failure denied him what looked set to be a memorable victory at the legendary endurance event.
Verstappen entered the iconic race with high hopes and quickly established himself as one of the standout performers across the weekend. Driving for Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing, the Dutchman and his team-mates spent a significant portion of the race at the front of the GT3 field and appeared firmly in control as the event moved into its closing stages.
However, disaster struck with just under three hours remaining. While leading the race, Verstappen’s car suffered a driveshaft failure that immediately ended the team’s challenge for victory. The mechanical issue forced the car out of contention and transformed what had been a dominant performance into a heartbreaking retirement.
Despite the disappointment for Verstappen’s squad, Mercedes-AMG still had reason to celebrate at the Nürburgring. Another Mercedes entry went on to secure overall victory, with the quartet of Maro Engel, Luca Stolz, Fabian Schiller and Maxime Martin delivering a composed and consistent performance to take the win for Mercedes-AMG Team RAVENOL.
The race itself was filled with drama from the opening hours. The fiercely competitive GT3 category quickly turned into a battle of survival as multiple front-running teams encountered problems early in the event. Accidents, technical issues and unpredictable weather conditions all played major roles in shaping the outcome of the race.
Several leading contenders were eliminated within the first six hours after a series of on-track incidents disrupted the order. As darkness arrived on Saturday evening, the weather added another layer of chaos. Heavy rain swept across the Nürburgring Nordschleife, creating extremely difficult conditions for drivers and teams.
One of the major setbacks caused by the changing weather affected Aston Martin’s Walkenhorst Motorsport operation. The team reportedly made the wrong tyre and strategy calls during the downpour, costing them valuable time and ultimately removing them from serious contention for victory.
During the wet and unpredictable phases of the race, Mercedes-AMG emerged as the strongest manufacturer in the field. At one stage, Mercedes cars occupied both first and second positions, highlighting the pace and reliability the brand showed throughout much of the endurance classic.
Following the race, Mercedes-AMG boss Christoph Sagemüller reflected on the emotional nature of the event. While delighted to see Mercedes return to the top step at the Nürburgring after a decade-long wait, he also acknowledged the painful outcome for Verstappen’s team.
Sagemüller explained that the Nürburgring 24 Hours remains one of the most prestigious endurance races for Mercedes-AMG, making the victory especially meaningful for everyone involved in the project. He praised Mercedes-AMG Team RAVENOL for finally ending the manufacturer’s long wait for another triumph at the event.
At the same time, he admitted it was difficult to fully celebrate knowing that Verstappen Racing had suffered such cruel misfortune after running so strongly for most of the race. According to Sagemüller, motorsport often delivers moments where success and disappointment exist side by side, and the Nürburgring weekend perfectly demonstrated that reality.
He highlighted the intense fight between the two leading Mercedes-AMG entries during the race and described it as unfortunate that Verstappen’s challenge ended prematurely after such an impressive performance. Sagemüller also thanked all the drivers, engineers, mechanics and support staff who contributed to the event, praising the collective effort behind Mercedes-AMG’s success.
Although Verstappen ultimately left the Nürburgring without a victory, his performance throughout the weekend once again demonstrated his versatility outside Formula 1. Competing in one of the toughest endurance races in the world, the Dutch star showed strong pace and adaptability before cruel luck intervened near the finish.
For Mercedes-AMG, the weekend ended with mixed emotions — satisfaction from finally reclaiming Nürburgring glory, but also frustration over what might have been for Verstappen and his team.
