Former F1 racer Alexander Rossi undergoes surgery after major Indy 500 crash
Former Formula 1 driver Alexander Rossi has undergone surgery after suffering injuries in a dramatic crash during preparations for the 2026 Indianapolis 500. The frightening accident took place during a practice session at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway and immediately raised concerns across the IndyCar paddock.
Rossi, who famously won the Indy 500 as a rookie in 2016, was involved in a high-speed incident after losing control of his Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet while exiting Turn 2. Traveling at more than 200 mph, his car slammed heavily into the SAFER barrier before briefly lifting off the ground. The impact left the vehicle badly damaged and triggered chaos behind him as other drivers attempted to avoid the wreck.
The crash quickly escalated into a multi-car incident. Pato O’Ward, driving for Arrow McLaren, tried to steer clear of Rossi’s spinning car but lost control in the process and collided with the wreckage. Former F1 driver Romain Grosjean was also caught up in the aftermath when he hit the wall while attempting to avoid the incident. Fortunately, all three drivers were able to climb from their cars, though Rossi required additional medical attention.
After initially being treated at the infield medical center, Rossi was transported to a nearby hospital for further evaluation. IndyCar medical officials later confirmed that the American driver was awake, alert, and in positive spirits despite the severity of the crash. Further examinations revealed that Rossi had sustained minor injuries to a finger on his left hand and his right ankle.
Ed Carpenter Racing later released an official statement confirming that Rossi successfully underwent outpatient surgery on Monday evening to repair the injuries. According to the team, there were no additional complications discovered during medical checks, and Rossi’s recovery would continue under the supervision of the IndyCar medical team.
Despite the painful setback, Rossi remains determined to compete in this year’s Indianapolis 500. The team stated that the current plan is for him to return to the track for the final practice session, traditionally known as Carb Day, before Sunday’s race. His participation, however, will still depend on medical clearance over the coming days.
The incident was especially heartbreaking because Rossi had been enjoying one of his strongest Indy 500 weekends in recent years. Just a day earlier, he secured second place in qualifying, marking his best starting position for the event in several seasons. Many fans believed he was a genuine contender for victory before the accident dramatically changed the mood in the paddock.
The crash also brought an end to what had been a remarkably clean month of running at Indianapolis, with drivers and teams previously avoiding major incidents throughout practice and qualifying sessions. The damaged cars of Rossi and O’Ward will now require significant rebuilding work ahead of race day. Rossi’s team is expected to prepare a backup chassis in time for the final practice session.
Support for Rossi poured in across the motorsport community following the accident. Fans, drivers, and teams expressed relief that the injuries were not more serious, especially considering the violence of the impact. Many also praised the safety improvements in modern IndyCar racing, which likely prevented far worse consequences in such a massive crash.
