Verstappen’s Team Battles Through Rain and Chaos to Stay … read more
The opening stages of the legendary delivered exactly the kind of drama fans expected, with changing weather, crashes, and constant unpredictability turning the race into a brutal endurance challenge. Despite the difficult conditions, and his Mercedes-AMG team remained firmly in contention for victory after surviving one of the toughest periods of the race so far.
As darkness slowly settled over the Nürburgring circuit, drivers were forced to deal with a track that repeatedly shifted between dry and wet conditions. Rain showers swept across different sections of the track, making tire strategy extremely complicated and increasing the risk of mistakes. Several top GT3 teams struggled to stay out of trouble, with crashes occurring throughout the field and one competitor even being disqualified during the chaos.
Through all the drama, however, Mercedes managed to maintain control near the front of the race. The manufacturer held a strong one-two position for large parts of the opening hours, keeping rivals from BMW at a distance while demonstrating impressive pace and consistency under pressure.
The No. 3 Verstappen Racing Mercedes-AMG began the race with Dani Juncadella behind the wheel. The Spaniard handled the opening phase before handing the car over to Verstappen himself. The four-time Formula 1 world champion then completed his stint in difficult circumstances, even making contact with a barrier at one stage as conditions worsened around the circuit. Fortunately for the team, the damage was not severe enough to end their challenge, allowing them to continue fighting near the front.
After Verstappen’s run, Jules Gounon took over driving duties and helped stabilize the team’s position before Lucas Auer climbed into the car during perhaps the most unpredictable period of the race. By then, rain had started falling across sections of the circuit, transforming the famous Nordschleife into a dangerous and slippery test of endurance.
Auer faced an especially demanding double stint lasting around two hours. Drivers throughout the field struggled to judge grip levels as some parts of the track remained dry while others became soaked by rain. Choosing the correct tires became a delicate gamble, with teams constantly monitoring radar updates and track conditions.
Speaking after his stint, Auer admitted that the constantly changing weather made the race extremely challenging. He explained that the team decided to use intermediate tires during the first stint because conditions were changing so quickly. According to the Austrian driver, the team felt comfortable with the decision and managed to avoid major problems despite the unpredictable circumstances.
Auer also described the stint as “very difficult,” highlighting how hard it was to maintain concentration while grip levels changed corner by corner around the massive circuit. Even experienced endurance racers found themselves struggling to adapt as visibility worsened and the fading daylight added another layer of difficulty.
Despite the chaos surrounding them, Verstappen Racing successfully navigated the dangerous conditions and remained among the leading contenders. Avoiding serious damage or costly mistakes became almost as important as outright speed, especially with so many competitors losing time through spins, crashes, and strategy errors.
Following Auer’s strong effort, the No. 3 Mercedes was handed back to Juncadella, who continued the fight near the front of the field. At the time, the Verstappen Racing entry was running in second place, narrowly behind the leading Mercedes No. 80 car driven by Luca Stolz.
With many hours still remaining in the famous 24-hour contest, the battle for victory was far from over. Weather conditions continued to threaten more surprises, and fatigue would soon become another major factor as drivers prepared for a long night at one of the world’s most unforgiving racing circuits.
For Verstappen and his team-mates, simply surviving the opening phase without major setbacks already represented an important achievement. Now, their focus shifts toward maintaining consistency, avoiding further trouble, and staying close enough to challenge for victory when the race reaches its final hours.
