Nurburgring Race Director Steps In as Verstappen Fever Takes…. read more
The excitement surrounding four-time Formula 1 world champion at the legendary has already reached extraordinary levels, forcing race officials to intervene before qualifying had even begun.
Verstappen’s much-anticipated debut at the iconic endurance event has attracted massive attention from fans and media alike, creating an atmosphere unlike anything the race has experienced before. The Dutch superstar is competing alongside team-mates , , and in the No. 3 Mercedes-AMG entry as he prepares to tackle the famous “Green Hell” for the first time in a 24-hour competition.
The impact of Verstappen’s participation has been enormous. For the first time in the history of the Nürburgring 24 Hours, tickets for the entire race weekend reportedly sold out, highlighting the incredible influence the reigning F1 champion continues to have on motorsport audiences around the world. Fans from across Europe and beyond have gathered in the Eifel mountains hoping to catch a glimpse of the Red Bull driver in action.
However, the overwhelming attention has also created challenges for organisers. Earlier in the week, Verstappen avoided several public appearances, including the traditional pre-race parade. Instead, his team-mates represented the Mercedes-AMG squad during those events. Reports suggested that organisers advised Verstappen to skip some sessions because of safety concerns linked to the huge crowds and intense media attention surrounding him.
The frenzy continued during the official drivers’ briefing ahead of qualifying. Race director Walter Hornung had to step in personally after photographers repeatedly focused on Verstappen rather than allowing the meeting to proceed normally.
The briefing itself was divided into two separate sessions — one conducted in German for local drivers and another in English for international competitors. During the meeting, Hornung explained the key rules and safety procedures that all drivers must follow throughout the event. These included regulations regarding yellow flag zones and the strict “Code 60” speed limits that are heavily enforced during incidents around the circuit.
Before the session began, rumours circulated that Verstappen might receive a private briefing because of the extraordinary attention surrounding him. Those rumours turned out to be false, as the world champion attended the standard briefing alongside every other driver. Verstappen reportedly chose to sit near the front of the room, close to the race director, but the meeting was delayed because photographers continued crowding around him and taking pictures.
The situation eventually became disruptive enough that Hornung addressed the photographers directly, instructing them to calm down, move away, and remain quiet so the drivers could focus on the important safety information being discussed. The unusual interruption demonstrated just how much attention Verstappen’s appearance has generated at the endurance classic.
Meanwhile, attention is also turning toward the track action itself. Thursday’s schedule includes the opening qualifying sessions for the Nürburgring 24 Hours, which function more like practice sessions rather than direct grid deciders. Alongside the regular qualifying runs, there are also special “Top Qualifying” sessions that will later determine the starting order for the race.
The first two qualifying sessions take place on Thursday afternoon and evening. One of the most important requirements for all competitors is completing laps during nighttime conditions. Verstappen must therefore participate in the evening session, as every driver is required to gain experience driving in the dark before competing in the demanding 24-hour race itself.
With sold-out crowds, intense media focus, and unprecedented excitement surrounding his debut, Verstappen’s presence has already transformed this year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours into one of the most talked-about endurance racing events in recent memory. Fans now eagerly wait to see whether the Formula 1 superstar can live up to the enormous expectations once the real racing begins on the fearsome Nordschleife circuit.
