Verstappen Hit With Massive 35kg BoP Penalty Ahead of Nürburgring 24H Night Challenge

The pressure around Max Verstappen’s Nürburgring 24 Hours debut just intensified after confirmation that his Mercedes-AMG GT3 will carry a massive 35-kilogram Balance of Performance (BoP) penalty compared to rival McLaren and Audi entries.

In endurance racing, a 35kg weight increase is not just a small inconvenience — it can completely change tire wear, braking stability, fuel consumption, and cornering balance over a 24-hour race. Verstappen’s Mercedes-AMG GT3 reportedly weighs around 1,355kg, leaving it significantly heavier than the lighter McLaren 720S GT3 and Audi R8 LMS Evo II machines he will battle around the terrifying Nordschleife.

What makes the challenge even bigger is that this will be Verstappen’s first proper experience racing the Nordschleife at night. The Nürburgring becomes a completely different monster after sunset — visibility drops dramatically, temperatures fall, and traffic management through the 25-kilometre circuit becomes one of the toughest tasks in motorsport.

Still, Verstappen has already shown frightening speed despite the handicap. During the opening qualifying sessions, the Dutchman stunned the paddock with an 8:18.539 lap that briefly sent his Verstappen Racing Mercedes to the top of the timesheets before the car eventually finished the session in the top positions overall.

The real concern for rivals is that Verstappen appears willing to push beyond the disadvantage. Reports from the paddock suggest he has spent weeks preparing in simulators specifically for the Nürburgring challenge, studying traffic behavior, nighttime references, and tire management for long stints.

But physics may still become the deciding factor.

Extra weight on the Nordschleife punishes cars brutally through high-speed compression zones like Flugplatz, Fuchsröhre, and the Karussell. Over long runs, the heavier Mercedes is expected to consume tires and brakes faster than its McLaren and Audi rivals, especially during nighttime double stints when track temperatures plunge.

One nighttime stint could reveal everything: whether Verstappen’s relentless preparation can overcome a BoP sheet that currently looks stacked against him.

And if he somehow wins carrying 35 extra kilograms on his Nürburgring 24H debut, it may become one of the most impressive endurance performances of his career.
