Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen will skip the traditional opening parade ahead of this weekend’s 24 Hours of Nürburgring after organisers raised concerns over safety and crowd control.
The Dutch superstar, who is making one of the most talked-about appearances of the endurance racing season, was expected to be among the major attractions as festivities began in the German town of Adenau on Wednesday. However, Verstappen Racing confirmed that neither Verstappen nor his team-mates — Jules Gounon, Dani Juncadella and Lucas Auer — would participate in the ceremonial parade through the town.
The parade, scheduled for 4 PM local time, is a long-standing tradition of the iconic endurance event and serves as an opportunity for fans to see drivers and cars up close before competitive action begins on Thursday. Although 161 cars are entered for the race weekend, only around 50 usually take part in the public procession.
This year’s edition of the Nürburgring 24 Hours has attracted significantly more global attention because of Verstappen’s involvement. The reigning F1 champion’s appearance at one of motorsport’s most demanding endurance races has generated huge excitement among fans travelling from across Europe and beyond.
According to reports, race organisers specifically advised against Verstappen attending the parade because of fears that the overwhelming number of supporters hoping to see him could create serious safety concerns. Officials reportedly believed crowd management around the Red Bull driver would become extremely difficult in the confined streets of Adenau, increasing risks for both fans and participants.
The decision was therefore made as a precautionary measure rather than a personal choice from Verstappen himself. Organisers stressed that the Dutchman was not refusing to engage with supporters, but that limiting his public appearances was considered the safest course of action during the event weekend.
For similar reasons, Verstappen is also expected to miss a scheduled meet-and-greet and autograph session at the circuit later in the week. Event officials again pointed to security concerns and the extraordinary level of interest surrounding his participation.
Despite his absence from the opening celebrations, anticipation remains enormous ahead of Verstappen’s first laps on track. Cars will officially begin running on Thursday as teams prepare for one of the toughest endurance races in the world around the legendary Nordschleife circuit.
The Nürburgring 24 Hours is widely regarded as one of motorsport’s ultimate challenges, combining high-speed sections, unpredictable weather and relentless traffic management across the daunting German track. Verstappen’s entry has only added to the spectacle, with many eager to see how the Formula 1 champion adapts to the unique demands of endurance racing.
While fans in Adenau may miss the chance to catch a glimpse of Verstappen during the parade, attention will quickly shift toward the circuit itself, where the Dutchman’s participation is set to be one of the defining storylines of the entire weekend.
