Sad News:Brighton & Hove Albion have paid tribute to an employee and supporter who were among the victims of Saturday’s air crash

Brighton & Hove Albion have paid heartfelt tributes to two of their own, Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, who tragically lost their lives in the Shoreham air crash. Grimstone, 23, was a cherished member of Brighton’s ground staff at the club’s Lancing training facility, while Schilt, an avid Seagulls fan, played alongside Grimstone for Worthing United. The two were on their way to a football match when their vehicle was struck by a plane that crashed during an airshow on the A27.

Brighton chairman Tony Bloom expressed the club’s deep sorrow, stating, “The thoughts and prayers of everybody at the club are with Matt and Jacob’s family and friends at this shocking time.” Manager Chris Hughton added, “Matt has been part of a great team we have at the club, and our thoughts go out to his and Jacob’s families at this devastating time.”

Matt Grimstone had been with Brighton for seven years, starting as part of the matchday event team before becoming a full-time apprentice groundsman in 2013. Jacob Schilt was not only a skilled footballer but also contributed to the Robert Eaton Memorial Fund (REMF), playing in charity matches that highlighted his passion for the sport and his community.

Brighton’s chief executive Paul Barber remembered both men fondly, highlighting their dedication to the club and their positive impact on those around them: “It is hard to find the right words to express the full extent of our shock and sadness at this time.”
