BREAKING: George Russell FACING Canadian Grand Prix ‘CRISIS’ at Mercedes…read more

Mercedes F1 star George Russell is at risk of coming away from this year’s Canadian Grand Prix and being immediately confronted with a career crisis.

George Russell may be heading into a defining moment of the 2026 Formula 1 season as pressure mounts at Mercedes following a stunning rise from teenage team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

The 28-year-old began the new regulation era in dominant fashion, winning the opening race in Australia and briefly leading the drivers’ championship while helping Mercedes establish themselves at the front of the constructors’ standings. Many had already tipped Russell as the early favourite for the title.

However, momentum has shifted dramatically after just four rounds. Antonelli, only 19, has exceeded expectations since replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes — a move initially viewed as a gamble by team boss Toto Wolff.

Since Russell’s victory in Melbourne, Antonelli has surged ahead with a string of record-breaking performances, including a win at the Japanese Grand Prix that made him the youngest championship leader in Formula 1 history. He strengthened his position further in Miami by claiming victory in the first full-length race held in the United States this season, converting his third consecutive pole position into another win.

Antonelli now leads Russell by 20 points in the championship standings, increasing scrutiny on the more experienced Mercedes driver ahead of the next race in Canada.

Speaking on the Sky F1 Show, presenter Simon Lazenby suggested the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix could become a pivotal moment for Russell’s campaign.

“He has got to come back, George, and he’s got to win Canada,” Lazenby said. “Otherwise, it goes from being an annoyance to a crisis.”

Lazenby added that a fourth straight win for Antonelli would underline the young Italian’s intention to challenge for the championship rather than settle into a supporting role at Mercedes.

The next race could offer Russell an opportunity to respond. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has traditionally suited him well, and Mercedes are expected to introduce upgrades for the Canadian weekend.

The 2026 Canadian Grand Prix is scheduled to take place from May 22–24 and will feature the sprint race format for the first time in the event’s history. With extra points available, the weekend could prove crucial in shaping the early title battle between Russell, Antonelli, and the rest of the Formula 1 field.
