Daniel Ricciardo Confirms Emotional F1 Paddock Return Ahead of Indy 500 Appearance
Former Formula 1 star Daniel Ricciardo has confirmed he will make a return to the racing paddock later this month as part of his visit to the iconic Indianapolis 500, admitting the experience could prove deeply emotional after stepping away from professional racing.
Ricciardo, who has not competed since the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, officially announced his retirement from motorsport earlier this year. Since leaving Formula 1, the Australian has shifted his attention toward business ventures and ambassadorial roles, including his partnership with Ford Motor Company and the expansion of his personal wine brand.
However, despite insisting he has moved on from racing, Ricciardo revealed that attending this year’s Indy 500 as a spectator may reignite strong emotions tied to his years in elite motorsport.
Speaking during an appearance on Conor Daly’s Speed Street podcast, Ricciardo explained that he is approaching the legendary event with the excitement of a lifelong fan rather than that of a driver.
According to Ricciardo, the atmosphere and prestige surrounding the Indy 500 have made it one of the races he has always wanted to experience firsthand, particularly after hearing fellow drivers describe the event’s unique culture and intensity.
“This sounds like something that’s really going to hit me hard emotionally,” Ricciardo admitted, adding that he is genuinely excited to simply enjoy the race from outside the cockpit.
The 2026 Indy 500 appearance will also coincide with a commercial collaboration between Ricciardo and IndyCar driver Conor Daly. Ricciardo’s wine label is set to feature in promotional activities linked to Daly’s participation for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing during the event.
Ricciardo also revealed that the decision to attend the race came after conversations with his father, who had long expressed a desire to witness the Indy 500 in person. The Australian said 2026 finally felt like the perfect opportunity to make the trip together.
The timing of the event creates a fascinating motorsport weekend, with the Indy 500 scheduled to take place only hours before the Canadian Grand Prix in Formula 1.
Although Ricciardo has repeatedly ruled out a competitive racing comeback, his return to the paddock environment is certain to spark renewed speculation among fans eager to see one of Formula 1’s most popular personalities back around the sport once again.
