FIA CONFIRMED Penalty on Mercedes Drivers after Miami grand Prix
The FIA has officially confirmed its final penalty rulings involving the Mercedes drivers following a dramatic and incident-filled weekend at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix, bringing clarity to several investigations that drew major attention across the Formula 1 paddock.
While Mercedes celebrated another impressive performance led by teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli, the governing body reviewed multiple incidents involving the Silver Arrows during both the sprint and main race sessions in Miami.
Antonelli, who went on to secure his third consecutive Grand Prix victory on Sunday, was earlier penalized after the sprint race for repeated track limits violations. FIA stewards determined that the young Italian exceeded track limits on four separate occasions during the sprint, resulting in a five-second time penalty that dropped him down the classification.
Despite that setback, Antonelli bounced back strongly during the main Grand Prix, converting pole position into another landmark victory for Mercedes. The 19-year-old has now firmly established himself as the leading contender in this year’s championship battle after extending his lead over teammate George Russell.
Russell himself also came under post-race scrutiny after several on-track incidents during the closing laps of the Miami race. However, after reviewing telemetry data and race footage, FIA officials confirmed that no further action would be taken against the British driver.
The FIA’s decisions followed a chaotic Miami weekend that featured multiple penalties across the grid, including sanctions handed to Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. Verstappen received a five-second penalty for crossing the pit exit line, while Leclerc was hit with a much heavier 20-second penalty after repeatedly leaving the track while nursing a damaged Ferrari during the final lap.
Mercedes team officials welcomed the FIA’s confirmation, particularly regarding Russell, whose fourth-place finish remained intact after the investigations concluded. The Brackley-based outfit now leaves Miami with growing momentum as Antonelli’s remarkable rise continues to reshape the championship picture.
The Miami Grand Prix also highlighted Mercedes’ consistency under the new 2026 regulations, with the team once again outperforming key rivals including Ferrari and Red Bull. Analysts now believe Mercedes may have established an early advantage in both car development and race execution heading into the European leg of the season.
