Daniel Ricciardo Announces Shock Formula One Return for 2027 Season
Former Formula One fan favourite Daniel Ricciardo has officially announced his return to the Formula One grid, ending months of speculation about his future in motorsport and sending excitement across the paddock ahead of the 2027 season.
The Australian driver confirmed on Friday that he has signed a multi-year agreement with the newly restructured Cadillac F1 project, which is expected to make its full competitive debut when Formula One enters a new era of regulations. Ricciardo, who stepped away from racing duties last season after losing his seat at RB, described the opportunity as “the perfect challenge at the right moment.”
Speaking during a press conference in Monaco, the eight-time Grand Prix winner admitted that he had initially believed his Formula One career was over before talks with the American-backed team reignited his passion for the sport.
“I took time away to honestly ask myself whether I still had the hunger to compete,” Ricciardo said. “The answer became clear very quickly. I miss racing, I miss the fight, and I believe I still have something valuable to offer Formula One.”
Ricciardo’s return comes after a difficult few years that saw the popular Australian struggle to rediscover the consistency that once made him one of the sport’s most feared overtakers. Despite flashes of brilliance during his spells with Renault and McLaren, his performances failed to meet expectations, eventually leading to his departure from the grid.
However, several senior figures within Formula One reportedly supported the idea of bringing the 36-year-old back, believing his experience and commercial appeal could play a key role in helping a new project establish itself quickly.
Cadillac team principal Graeme Lowdon praised Ricciardo’s leadership qualities and experience, insisting the Australian can still compete at the highest level.
“Daniel brings enormous value to this team,” Lowdon explained. “He has race-winning experience, understands pressure at the top level, and his personality fits perfectly with the vision we are building.”
The announcement has already triggered strong reactions across the Formula One community. Fans flooded social media with celebrations shortly after the news broke, while several drivers welcomed the return of one of the grid’s most recognisable personalities.
Former world champion Lewis Hamilton also reacted positively, saying Formula One is “better with Daniel around.”
Ricciardo is expected to begin simulator work later this year before participating in private testing sessions ahead of pre-season preparations. His comeback is likely to become one of the biggest talking points heading into the 2027 campaign as Formula One prepares for another major competitive reset.
