FIA president backs potential Christian Horner return to F1

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has expressed support for the possibility of Christian Horner making a return to the Formula 1 paddock, almost a year after his sudden exit from Red Bull.

Horner, who had been in charge of the Milton Keynes-based team since their arrival in the sport in 2005, was last seen in the paddock at the 2025 British Grand Prix. His long tenure ended abruptly soon after, when Red Bull took the unexpected decision to remove him from his role as team principal.

The decision, driven by the company’s Austrian leadership, was led by Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of Corporate Projects and New Investments. Mintzlaff later spoke publicly in December, framing the move as part of a wider organisational restructure.

In recent comments, Ben Sulayem highlighted Horner’s extensive experience and lasting impact on the sport, suggesting he would remain a valuable figure should he return in any capacity.

“Christian has been a major presence in Formula 1 for many years,” he said. “The sport benefits from experienced leadership, and there is always room for those who have contributed at the highest level.”

Across nearly two decades in charge, Horner played a central role in Red Bull’s rise to the top of Formula 1, delivering multiple constructors’ and drivers’ titles. His tenure featured championship success with drivers including Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen, reinforcing his status as one of the most accomplished team principals in the sport’s history.

Although no formal position has been announced, speculation continues to build around a potential comeback—either within Formula 1 or elsewhere in motorsport. For now, the FIA president’s remarks suggest the door remains open for Horner’s return.
