BREAKING: FIA Confirms penalties for Mercedes star at Miami Grand Prix… read more

Kimi Antonelli’s Miami Grand Prix weekend took a late turn when a post-race penalty altered the final Sprint results.

The Mercedes rookie, who leads the Formula 1 standings, had initially secured fourth place after another strong performance, finishing ahead of teammate George Russell. However, that result was later amended following a stewards’ investigation.

Officials ruled that Antonelli had breached track limits on multiple occasions during the Sprint. As a result, he received a five-second time penalty, which dropped him from fourth to sixth in the final classification. The adjustment allowed Russell and Max Verstappen to move up the order.

The sanction came after repeated violations of track limits rules, which require drivers to keep part of the car within the white lines. Antonelli had already been shown the black-and-white flag on lap 12 as a warning for earlier infringements.

Despite that, he exceeded track limits again on the final lap—his fourth offence—triggering an automatic penalty under FIA regulations. The time penalty was then added to his race time after the finish.

The setback could impact the title race, where every point is crucial. Losing two places in the Sprint may prove costly over the course of the season.

For Mercedes, the outcome was mixed. While Russell gained from the revised standings, Antonelli’s drop limited the team’s overall result and underlined the importance of precision in modern Formula 1, where even minor mistakes can have significant consequences.

Looking ahead, Antonelli will need to be more disciplined with track limits if he is to protect his championship lead and avoid further penalties.
