A late penalty significantly altered the outcome for Kimi Antonelli following the sprint race at the Miami Grand Prix, dealing a setback to both the young driver and his Mercedes outfit.
Antonelli, who currently leads the drivers’ championship, initially crossed the finish line in fourth place, ahead of his teammate and title contender George Russell. However, post-race deliberations resulted in a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits, pushing the 19-year-old down to sixth in the final classification. This adjustment promoted Russell and Max Verstappen ahead of him.
The penalty stemmed from repeated track limits violations during the race. Antonelli had already been shown the black-and-white warning flag on lap 12, indicating he was on the brink of a sanction. Despite the caution, he committed a fourth infringement on the final lap, automatically triggering the time penalty under FIA regulations.
The race itself had already proven challenging for the Italian. Starting from second on the grid, Antonelli suffered a poor launch and dropped to fourth by the first corner. From there, he struggled to regain momentum and was unable to mount a serious challenge against the cars ahead, including Charles Leclerc and the two McLaren drivers who dominated proceedings.
Instead of advancing, Antonelli spent much of the race under pressure from Russell behind, limiting his ability to recover lost ground. The eventual penalty compounded what had already been a frustrating outing.
For Mercedes, the result marked a rare dip in performance during a season where they have largely set the pace. Finishing fourth and sixth in the sprint race allowed their competitors to reduce the gap in the constructors’ standings.
Among those rivals, Ferrari showed encouraging signs of progress after introducing an extensive upgrade package to their car for the Miami weekend. Meanwhile, McLaren emerged as the standout performer, securing a commanding one-two finish and signaling a return to the form that saw them excel in the previous season.
With momentum shifting among the leading teams, Antonelli’s penalty could prove significant in what is shaping up to be an increasingly competitive championship battle.
