Mercedes rising star Kimi Antonelli suffered a late setback at the Miami Grand Prix after being handed a post-race penalty that altered the final Sprint race classification.
The young Italian driver, who currently leads the Formula 1 World Championship standings, initially crossed the finish line in fourth place, delivering what appeared to be another strong performance for Mercedes. He finished ahead of his teammate and closest title challenger, George Russell, reinforcing his advantage in the championship battle. However, the result did not stand for long.
Shortly after the race concluded, race stewards reviewed Antonelli’s driving and determined that he had exceeded track limits on multiple occasions. As a result, he was issued a five-second time penalty, which significantly impacted his finishing position. The penalty dropped him from fourth to sixth place in the final Sprint race results, promoting both Russell and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen ahead of him.
The issue stemmed from Antonelli repeatedly running beyond the permitted boundaries of the circuit. In Formula 1, drivers are required to keep at least part of their car within the white lines that define the track limits. Failure to do so consistently can result in warnings and eventual penalties.
