SHOCKING NEWS:one of best female golfers ever died in tragic crash

Danielle Downey was an exceptional athlete whose talent and drive left a lasting impact both on and off the golf course. A standout at Spencerport High School in the 1990s, Downey excelled in both basketball and golf, making history as one of the school’s most decorated athletes. Her accolades included being named All-Greater Rochester in basketball and receiving multiple prestigious awards, such as the Spencerport Sports Booster Club award and the Selendar award, which recognized her as the senior academic athlete of the year.

Downey’s success continued at Auburn University, where she became a force in collegiate golf. She won three tournaments during her time with the Tigers, including the 2000 SEC individual title, and was a four-time all-SEC team member. Downey also led Auburn to SEC championships in 2000 and 2003 and achieved a tie for second place in the 2002 NCAA championship, the best finish in the school’s history. Her accomplishments extended to the national stage as well, where she defeated future LPGA star Paula Creamer in the 2002 U.S. Women’s Amateur.

Turning professional in 2003, Downey played on the Futures Tour and later earned her LPGA playing privileges in 2006. Despite her struggles on the LPGA Tour, where she made the cut 15 times and earned over $152,000 in five seasons, Downey remained deeply involved in the sport. After her playing career, she returned to Auburn University to assist the women’s golf team, leading them to a strong NCAA Championship finish and later becoming the director of golf operations for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Tragically, Downey’s life was cut short on January 30, 2014, when she died in a car crash at the age of 33. Her untimely death was a profound loss to the golf community and all who knew her. However, her legacy continues to inspire through the Danielle Downey Classic, a Symetra Tour tournament held at Brook-Lea Country Club from 2015 to 2021, and the Danielle Downey Golf Experience, launched in 2023. These events honor her memory and contributions to the sport she loved, ensuring that her impact on golf and her community endures.
