Verstappen’s 2026 Shake-Up as McLaren Land Red Bull’s Key Architect
Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has once again made headlines—this time for developments both on and off the track. While his exploits at the Nürburgring have ignited renewed enthusiasm for endurance racing, a significant personnel move between two leading F1 teams is set to reshape the competitive landscape ahead of 2026.
Verstappen’s recent appearances at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife—often dubbed the “Green Hell”—have sparked a surge of interest in the iconic 24-hour race. After securing victory on his GT3 debut last year and crossing the line first again during the NLS2 round in March before a subsequent disqualification, the Dutchman is preparing for another major test in May’s 24-hour event. However, not all teams eager to participate will secure entry, following the introduction of new restrictions limiting car numbers for the race.
Meanwhile, a major transfer in the Formula 1 paddock has captured equal attention. McLaren have officially announced the signing of Gianpiero Lambiase from Red Bull Racing, marking one of the most high-profile technical moves in recent seasons.
Lambiase, widely regarded as one of the most influential race engineers in modern F1, has worked alongside Verstappen since the Dutch driver joined Red Bull in 2016. In 2024, he was promoted to Head of Racing while continuing his duties as Verstappen’s race engineer. His departure signals the end of a highly successful partnership that delivered multiple world championships.
Under the new agreement, Lambiase will remain in his current role at Red Bull until the conclusion of his contract, joining McLaren no later than 2028 as Chief Racing Officer. The position, which oversees leadership of the race team, currently falls under Team Principal Andrea Stella. Upon arrival, Lambiase will assume those responsibilities full-time.
In an official statement, McLaren emphasized that the appointment reinforces the team’s long-term vision of sustained championship contention. The organization highlighted its ability to attract elite talent under the leadership of CEO Zak Brown and Stella, both of whom are on long-term contracts.
Before his Red Bull tenure, Lambiase built extensive experience at the Silverstone-based team formerly known as Jordan, Midland, Spyker, and Force India. His race engineering résumé includes working with drivers such as Vitantonio Liuzzi, Paul di Resta, Sergio Perez, and Daniil Kvyat.
As Verstappen prepares for another demanding endurance challenge, McLaren’s strategic acquisition underscores a broader shift in F1’s competitive order—one that could significantly influence the championship battle in the years ahead.
