Fresh intrigue has surrounded Lewis Hamilton after reports suggested the seven-time world champion holds a powerful contractual position within Ferrari — a factor that could shape the team’s 2026 title ambitions.

According to former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher, Hamilton’s agreement with Scuderia Ferrari effectively establishes him as the team’s undisputed number one driver. Schumacher claims the structure of Hamilton’s contract discourages Ferrari from enforcing team orders that might compromise his standing, even as he battles teammate Charles Leclerc.

The claim has ignited debate across the paddock, particularly given the contrasting fortunes of Ferrari’s drivers last season. In 2025, Leclerc outperformed Hamilton by a commanding 86-point margin and secured seven podium finishes, while Hamilton endured a difficult debut year in red, failing to reach the podium at all. However, the early stages of 2026 have painted a more competitive picture. Yet Schumacher remains skeptical about Ferrari’s overall prospects. Speaking on the German podcast Backstage Boxengasse, he argued that Ferrari’s internal dynamics could hinder their championship challenge, particularly against a resurgent Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. In his view, contract complexities and an unwillingness to implement decisive team strategies may prevent Ferrari from operating with the ruthless efficiency required to fight for the title.

Beyond the Ferrari debate, shifting regulatory interpretations from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) have provided a broader lifeline to several teams navigating the sport’s evolving 2026 framework.
