Ferrari make late FP1 driver switch after Hamilton setback at Japanese Grand Prix

Scuderia Ferrari have made a surprise late change to their driver line-up ahead of the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix at the iconic Suzuka Circuit, with Lewis Hamilton ruled out of the opening practice session due to a sudden physical issue.

The seven-time world champion had been scheduled to take part in FP1 as Ferrari continue refining their SF-26 package. However, the team confirmed on Friday morning that Hamilton would sit out the session after experiencing what was described as a “sudden and temporary physical setback.”

While no detailed medical explanation has been disclosed, sources within the paddock indicate that Hamilton felt discomfort during pre-session preparations. Ferrari have opted for a precautionary approach, prioritising the Briton’s fitness over immediate track running at a circuit known for its physical and technical demands.

Stepping in as a replacement is Ferrari junior driver Oliver Bearman, who continues to build a strong reputation within the team. The 20-year-old has already impressed engineers with his composure and speed in previous appearances and had been scheduled for simulator work prior to the late call-up.

Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur confirmed the decision was made jointly with Hamilton, emphasising a long-term view for the race weekend.

“Lewis is feeling okay, but we decided together that it’s best for him to sit out FP1. It’s a long weekend, and we want him at 100% for qualifying and the race. Oliver is ready, and this is a good opportunity for him to get valuable track time,” Vasseur said.

Bearman’s participation adds an extra layer of intrigue to the opening session, as Ferrari continue their push to challenge early-season frontrunners Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. His role will be crucial in gathering data on tyre behaviour and track evolution, particularly with variable weather conditions forecast across the weekend.

Hamilton is expected to return for FP2 later in the day, although Ferrari have made it clear that his condition will be assessed continuously before a final decision is taken.

The late adjustment has already triggered speculation across the paddock, with rival teams closely monitoring developments. Any prolonged absence for Hamilton could have significant implications for the championship fight as the 2026 season begins to intensify.

For now, attention shifts to Bearman, who has been handed a valuable opportunity to showcase his potential on one of Formula 1’s most demanding circuits.
