A former rugby league player has passed away at the age of 40.
Ricky Bibey died while on vacation, as reported by one of his previous clubs. The prop-forward, who played for St Helens and Wigan Warriors, made his debut in 2001. Today, former teams honored the athlete, who was compelled to retire due to injury in 2012.
Throughout his distinguished career with clubs such as Leigh Centurions and Wakefield Trinity, the Leigh-born player achieved the honor of winning the Challenge Cup twice. Wakefield expressed their condolences through a heartfelt message on social media.
The statement read: “Trinity is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former prop-forward Ricky Bibey, aged 40. Ricky represented Trinity from 2007 to 2009, making 60 appearances. We extend our sympathies to Ricky’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
Leigh East, the club where Bibey began his journey as a junior player, also shared their condolences. A spokesperson for the club tweeted: “Everyone at the club is heartbroken to hear about the passing of our former junior Ricky Bibey, who died while on holiday.
“Ricky had a professional career with several clubs, including Leigh, Wigan, St Helens, and Wakefield. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this sorrowful period.”
Leeds Rhinos also paid their respects, stating: “We are saddened to hear this morning of the untimely passing of former players Ricky Bibey, who played for Wigan, Saints, Wakefield, and Leigh. Our thoughts are with his friends and family during this tragic time.”
