Unai Emery may be handed pre-season boost at Aston Villa as Boubacar Kamara update emerges

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa squad has already begun pre-season training for the upcoming campaign, despite the previous season ending just a few weeks ago. The non-international players, including new signings like Samuel Illing-Junior and Ross Barkley, were seen back at Bodymoor Heath on Monday (8 July). Additionally, Boubacar Kamara was spotted at the training ground for gym work, providing a positive update for the team. While some key players like Ollie Watkins and Emi Martinez are still busy with international duties, the squad is gearing up for an exciting season ahead.

The 24-year-old has been out of action since February when he had to leave the field during the second half of Villa’s 2-1 loss to Manchester United at Villa Park. However, up until that point, he had been one of Emery’s most reliable players.

In that game, Kamara was the most accurate passer, successfully finding a teammate with 94 percent of his 36 passes attempted, as reported by Fotmob. Four of those passes reached a teammate in the final third, showcasing his ability to stretch the opposition’s defense alongside former teammate Douglas Luiz.

Kamara’s performance in possession was nearly flawless, completing all three dribbles attempted in the match, more than Luiz, John McGinn, and Jacob Ramsey combined.

Compared to other midfielders in the Premier League, very few can match the danger posed by the Villa star when he has the ball at his feet.

According to Fbref, the 24-year-old ranks in the 90th percentile for pass completion percentage per match, averaging 89.1 percent, including 5.83 passes into the final third.

What sets him apart in Emery’s system is his ability to avoid offside passes, with Kamara rarely falling into that trap. He ranks in the top 10 percent of his peers for the fewest offside passes per 90 minutes, averaging just 0.05 per game. He not only passes forward fearlessly but also times it impeccably.

Off the ball, the midfielder is not afraid to put in the hard work. Last season, he ranked in the top 16 percent of Premier League midfielders for dribblers tackled per game and the top 21 percent for tackles won per match.

This defensive prowess was evident in his last game against Manchester United, where he engaged in ten ground duels and won 100 percent of his attempted tackles in the match.

Luiz’s transfer to Juventus for the summer has been officially confirmed, leaving a gap in the midfield that needs to be addressed before the upcoming season. Ensuring Kamara’s full recovery is crucial for Villa during this summer period.

Throughout the previous season, the Brazilian player featured in 53 matches under Emery across all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists to help propel the Villans into the top four.

With Luiz’s absence in the midfield, Kamara will have an increased responsibility upon his return to full fitness. Emery will be pleased to have him back in action at Bodymoor Heath.

On a different note, there have been talks of a potential swap deal involving Denzel Dumfries moving to Villa Park from Inter Milan this summer.
