Celtic are planning a summer move for Alex McCarthy, the goalkeeper from Southampton.

According to the Daily Mail, Celtic is interested in signing Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy during the upcoming summer transfer window. The Scottish Premiership giants are anticipating the retirement of Joe Hart and have identified McCarthy as a potential replacement. However, Celtic is not the only club interested in recruiting McCarthy’s services, as Liverpool and Newcastle United are also monitoring the soon-to-be free agent. While the Premier League duo is in need of a new backup goalie, McCarthy, who is 34 years old, may prefer to continue playing regularly, which Celtic is offering. McCarthy is also being considered by some clubs in the Saudi Pro League, but joining Celtic could be more appealing as it would provide him with the opportunity to finally play in the Champions League. McCarthy recently regained his place in the starting XI for Southampton after Gavin Bazunu, the first-choice goalkeeper, suffered an Achilles tendon injury last month. He has impressed in his performances and has helped his team secure a place in the promotion play-offs. Southampton played a goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion in the first leg of the play-offs, and McCarthy will be eager to keep another clean sheet in the second leg to ensure qualification for the final. Celtic and other interested clubs could be watching him closely, and manager Brendan Rodgers seems to be a fan of McCarthy’s style of play, as he has previously considered signing him. McCarthy brings a wealth of experience to the table and is capable of filling the shoes of Hart. Acquiring him for free would be a significant coup for Celtic. The club is on the verge of securing their 54th title and is already making preparations for the next season. Rodgers is determined to make an impact in European competitions and is seeking quality signings that can greatly enhance his squad. Landing McCarthy would be a valuable addition to his plans.
