The distance between Celtic and Rangers and Hearts is narrowing.
That’s how Jambos legend Gary Mackay sees it.
It happens just a few days after Rangers easily defeated Steven Naismith’s team 2-0 in the Scottish Cup semi-finals, sending them to the championship game.
The main event is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, when they will take on Celtic, Glasgow’s bitter rivals.
Hearts had already lost in the League Cup, so this was their second Hampden loss to Rangers this season.
However, Mackay thinks the difference is getting smaller now that they have defeated Celtic twice this season.
Hearts have 51 Premiership points since the beginning of November. This puts them just one point behind Celtic and three behind Rangers.
Mackay stated, “You look at the resources,” to the Daily Record. I think Where Hearts Are punching a little bit above our weight.
To get in the top two, though, you have to continue to aim high. Sadly, football’s current finances make it less likely to occur.
“But our league form has been outstanding over the last five or six months. It trails Celtic and Rangers by not much. It’s a matter of improving throughout the next five games and preparing for the upcoming campaign.
“I was disappointed (on Sunday),” he said. I believed that there wasn’t enough originality from center to front.
We were not able to get as close to the Rangers as we would have liked. When it came to attacking, it wasn’t very good. Perhaps it’s because they’re a youthful group—one or two of them were in their first semifinal—and playing a club of Rangers’ caliber is a tough ask.

“But in the end, you have to make sure you compete with them if your goal in the game is to win trophies—and I’m probably not the appropriate person to talk to about that.
“That first goal was going to give Hearts the opportunity to make it squeaky bum time for Rangers, or it was going to offer Rangers breathing room. Sadly, Hearts never gave themselves a chance to establish that foundation.
But everyone must have patience with Steven. Though he has only been in charge for a year and a half, there have been a few close calls, even for the renowned 1998 cup winners Billy Brown and Jim Jefferies.”
