28yo has excelled in Europe but £4m man hasn’t been seen in ’24, Gers could make transfer decision in summer

Rangers fans were excited ahead of the transfer window last summer but were left disappointed when the window shut, Philippe Clement inheriting a team that was out of shape and out of form.

There is a misconception that previous managers haven’t been backed but the current Gers boss will be more than happy to get a similar sort of budget to rebuild his squad. One of the biggest problems that Rangers will face again is relying on players moving on to help subsidise Philippe Clement’s overhaul.

Jose Cifuentes and Sam Lammers will be near the top of the list for possible departures, there will be others who would want Cyriel Dessers’ name also added.

The most obvious player who should be on his way out of Ibrox when the transfer window opens is Ben Davies.

Signed for a reported £4m, it’s safe to say that Rangers haven’t really got their money’s worth out of the former Liverpool defender.

Davies has been fit for the whole of 2024 but hasn’t played a single minute of football.

The last time he played was against Real Betis away from home in the Europa League.

In fairness, the 28-year old has put in some decent performances in Europe this season, the defeat to Aris Limassol aside – he wasn’t the only one though.

Davies may have been jettisoned by Philippe Clement, but this is no reason to take the first offer that comes in.

He has only been at the club a couple of seasons, however, he has faced better strikers than he will have done previously in his career and will still have a good reputation in England.

Nils Koppen can also use his displays in the Europa League as an example of why he is capable of.

Just because he isn’t the right fit for Rangers, doesn’t mean that he can’t do a job for someone else.

Connor Goldson and John Souttar will be around for a while yet with the future of Leon Balogun not quite as clear.

Clement clearly likes the big Nigeria but he isn’t getting any younger.

Rangers best defence was when there were three senior central defenders and one as a development or project centre-half.

If Balogun is released, another two will be needed.

Ben Davies might not bring in what we paid for him but he should still fetch enough to acquire at least one reliable and established centre-half.

Getting better value for money is just one of many problems that Clement has to fix and paying £27,000 for a player sitting in the stands or on the bench, isn’t good value.
