Rangers have missed out on millions after being knocked out of the Europa League early, according to Dan Plumley. The football finance expert admitted it was a financial blow to the club, but could give them full focus on the Scottish Premiership title and direct qualification to the Champions League.
Philippe Clement’s men crashed out of the Europa League after a 1-0 loss to Benfica at Ibrox earlier in March, despite dominating the game throughout.
‘”It’s a blow,” he exclusively told Ibrox News.
“We know that the Europa League money is nowhere near the level of the Champions League, but go deep into that competition and you’re into prize money in the region of £10million if you get all the way to the final based on progression through the knockout rounds.
“It’s a blow financially for Rangers in that regard, I guess the other blow is the Scottish coefficient as a result of that linked to what that means for Scottish football in terms of Champions League places.
“When you roll that through, the other side of the argument is that may give Rangers full focus on aiming at the league title which is absolutely a relevant point in the debate to get back in the Champions League proper, as it stands right now, would be a very positive outcome towards the end of the season.
“There are both sides of the argument there, but financially they have lost out on a few million by not going deeper into that competition this year.”
The Bears have been flying the flag for Scotland all by themselves in Europe for years now with Celtic, Hearts and Aberdeen all failing miserably.
Clement can still win the domestic treble in his first season at the club, and what an amazing achievement that would be to set them up for potential Champions League football next season.
