Next Aberdeen manager: Who do fans want as next permanent appointment?

For the fourth time in three years, Aberdeen is looking for a new manager.

Since Derek McInnes’ long rule ended in March 2021, Stephen Glass, Jim Goodwin, and Barry Robson have all came and gone.

Peter Leven and, more importantly, Neil Warnock have also held the reins on a short basis, but the Englishman’s surprise departure last weekend has shifted the spotlight back to chairman Dave Cormack and who he chooses next.

Interviews are scheduled for this week, and Cormack must ensure that this appointment is correct.

Aberdeen fans’ tolerance with their chairman is wearing thin, and Cormack must not get this one wrong. But who would Dons fans choose as their new boss?

We questioned them, and here are some of their responses…

Lewis, Aberdeen: Must be a foreign manager with a Scottish assistant. Typical Glasgow-based media outlets are spewing the typical Scottish nonsense.

Gary and Penicuik:How could everything have gone so poorly in four years under Cormack?! This is his final chance to turn the club around before we become the laughing stock of Scottish football again. We have a great group, but something is missing. I understand that some Dons supporters may not want him, but Neil Lennon is the clear choice for me.

Marti, Aberdeen: If it’s Lennon, I know a lot of people won’t be back since I heard a lot of negative things about him on Saturday. We can’t take a chance on [Mark] Fotheringham; we need someone who has established themselves in Scottish football or will move abroad. Cormack must get this one perfect or he will walk himself.

Anonymous:I would prefer Neil Lennon to be the next manager, but I have a feeling he is not Cormack’s first option. Any previous history with Celtic is irrelevant, and Neil appears to desire the position.

Joe, Barnet: Fergie’s son. Darren Ferguson is the man for the manager’s position. Proven managerial track record, understands the demands, and would welcome the challenge. Certainly one to consider. Forget Lennon; Celtic through and through.

Anonymous in Aberdeen:Darren Ferguson would be worth a shot if he came!

Sunderland should consider signing Neil Lennon or bringing back Derek McInnes.

Scott, Elgin: Derek McInnes or Tony Docherty. I’d also appreciate it if it was Steve Clarke (though I doubt he’d accept it), but please no Neil Lennon!

Sandy, Elgin: Get the humble pie out of the freezer and grovel before Derek McInnes. Give him the money the other managers received. Definitely not Neil Lennon.

Gordon, Highlands: We need a football coach who understands modern forms of play and can find players who suit the team’s pattern. Fotheringham’s resume looks great; let’s give him a shot. If not, Michael O’Neill has coached some decent teams. Not Stephen Robinson following the Goodwin fiasco.

Kieran in Edinburgh:I would prefer the Bodo Glimt manager [Kjetil Knutsen], but that is doubtful. I believe a foreign manager may perform well.

Arch, Aberdeen: Fotheringham as manager? Good grief, no! His claim to have a better CV than three former Dons managers is a little thin when you consider that two of them had no prior experience as full-time first-team managers and the other’s record was quite mediocre. My curriculum vitae is that good. He comes across as an arrogant, loudmouth. Michael Beale comes to mind.

According to Chris from Aberdeen, Lennon has a track record of failures after leaving Celtic. Ask Alex Neil whether he will come. Stephen Robinson has done quite well at St Mirren, but they are not Aberdeen. A European manager – either Spanish or German – comes to mind. There are other alternatives to Lennon, many of which are superior.

Anita suggests hiring Neil Lennon as manager and bringing back Scott Brown as an assistant.

George, Huntley:Bring in Dick and Ian Campbell. Lots of expertise with getting the best out of players to form a team.

Ross, Aberdeen:We’d love to have Ricardo Rodriguez, who we’ve previously linked with.

David in Galashiels:Fotheringham is being evaluated since the German consultancy study suggests German or Austrian experienced candidates, but his track record is dismal. Please, no Lennon, and never [Frank] Lampard. As with prior players, younger contenders from smaller, northern European countries may be the best option.

Anonymous suggests that the Dons hire a foreign coach, such as Christian Titz (Magdeburg’s manager).

RS Tornway: Cormack is quite clever. He’s waited patiently for the proper man. It is clear to anyone. Jurgen Klopp has spent his entire life training for the big task.
