Adrian Clarke, a former star of the EFL, believes that Ipswich Town ought to have added a defender with promotion fighting experience from the Championship during the January transfer window. Ipswich has made a name for itself this season as a potential candidate for automatic promotion to the Premier League. The Tractor Boys’ dreams of earning automatic promotion, however, were dashed when they lost 2-1 to Cardiff City over the weekend, giving up both goals in stoppage time.
In order to help their defence and their chances of being promoted, Clarke emphasised that Ipswich ought to have added a player with experience playing at the top of the table. With the amount of goals Ipswich has given up, the former EFL star said that he is shocked that the team is still in the running for the top two. In his opinion, the Ipswich defence need maintain more clean sheets in order to avoid depending solely on their forwards to outscore opponents in every game. Clarke stated on the What The EFL podcast, “Look, I have been saying it all season about Ipswich Town’s centre-backs; I think they should have upgraded in January.” “They do make mistakes, so they should have brought someone with some experience, maybe from the top end of the Championship.”On this occasion, we witnessed [Cameron] Burgess attempt to clear the ball [during the build-up to Cardiff City’s first goal], and they were successful. You can’t argue they haven’t had a successful season.”It’s unbelievable they are still in the race for the top two considering the goals they concede,” Ipswich said. “I just think they need more clean sheets, Ipswich. They are having to score two, three, or four to win games.”With one point separating them from Leeds United, who are in second place, Ipswich is now in third position.
