Breaking News: Rangers target will now ‘leave for nothing’ as Ibrox outfit saved from £2.5m fee

Rangers target will now 'leave for nothing' as Ibrox outfit saved from £2.5m fee

Gijs Smal, the star of the Eredivisie, is about to “leave for nothing” as Celtic joins Scottish Premiership rival Rangers in the hunt for his signature. FC Twente could have made almost £2.5 million by selling the player last summer.

After leading the Eredivisie assist charts in 2022–2023 and setting up ten goals for his eternally appreciative teammates, the highly regarded left-back has struggled a little bit in the current campaign.

Due to an injury, Gijs Smal missed the first few months. Furthermore, despite being back to full fitness before Christmas, his recent form has frequently left a lot to be desired. That hasn’t stopped a number of domestic and international teams from staking claims on a 26-year-old who might still prove to be a great asset on a free transfer, though.

Rangers, who took a look at Smal in the January window, are still interested. Given the location of the journal that offers this week’s update, 1908, which is situated in Rotterdam, Feyenoord’s mention shouldn’t really surprise anyone.

However, Rangers may have competition from across the city as Celtic is also looking for a left-sided full-back. Alexandro Bernabei, who will join Brazilian team Internacional on Thursday, appears destined to leave Twente empty-handed.

The Warming Up podcast host and Dutch reporter Leon ten Voorde states, “I do believe that clubs that are really interested in Gijs Smal.”

It disappointed him much that he was unable to find employment last summer. For Twente as well. He will depart without paying a transfer fee if he departs.

There will be no cost to access Eredivisie Ace.

According to reports, Smal was once valued at approximately six million euros. Ten Voorde continues, “the Enschede outfit would have been lucky to get even ‘half’ that figure even if Twente had managed to sell him back in 2023.”

The reporter says, “(£2.5 million) would have been a nice amount.” “He will leave for nothing if he leaves (this summer), which is unclear at this point.”

Ten Voorde suggests that Twente is still working to come to new terms with Smal, if only to keep him from leaving on a free transfer.

Rangers, who are also interested in Fluminense’s APOEL loanee Jefte Vital, most likely view the Dutchman as a potential replacement for Borna Barisic, who is now out of form, while Ridvan Yilmaz has established himself as Philippe Clement’s first option.

On Sunday, the title-chasing Rangers will visit Hibernian, having just returned from a well-deserved 2-2 Europa League draw against Benfica.
