Celtic receive indisputable evidence of ear-damaging racket as Fortress Paradise rips up the record books

The roar of Celtic fans when Nicolas Kuhn scored in this week’s Champions League match was the second-highest noise level ever recorded at a European sports stadium, according to German media.

The intense volume, recorded at 129 decibels, reached levels equivalent to a jackhammer, with hearing experts warning that such noise can lead to permanent ear damage. Celtic celebrated one of their most memorable European nights by coming from behind to beat RB Leipzig, a Bundesliga leader, 3-1.

The German newspaper *Leipziger Volkszeitung* measured the decibel levels at key moments, noting that Kuhn’s goal, scored in the first half’s injury time, matched the noise level of a jet taking off. Other significant sounds included Kuhn’s equalizer and Reo Hatate’s goal to make it 3-1, both reaching 121 decibels.

Currently, the world record for stadium noise is 142.2 decibels, set by Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium during a 2014 NFL game. The European record, 131 decibels, was set by Galatasaray fans in a 2011 derby against Fenerbahce. A peak of 115 decibels was recorded at an Old Firm cup final at Hampden in 2018.
