Alexandro Bernabei’s recent standout performance for his loan club, Internacional, left one South American journalist so impressed that he suggested the Argentine should be called up… by BRAZIL!
The Celtic left-back is revitalizing his career after struggling to make an impact at Parkhead. Bernabei, 24, was signed by Ange Postecoglou for £3.8 million from Argentine club Lanus in July 2022, and made 19 appearances in his first season.
However, after falling out of favor under Postecoglou’s successor, Brendan Rodgers, Bernabei was loaned back to South America in March 2024, where he’s rediscovered his form with Internacional. In 20 appearances, he has contributed 3 goals and 3 assists. Some reports in Argentina are even suggesting he could be in line for a surprise call-up to Lionel Scaloni’s national team.
During a recent match on Friday, where Internacional won 2-0 against Fluminense, one observer, seemingly unaware of his nationality, praised Bernabei’s performance so much that they even suggested he should be brought into Brazil’s squad. Tim Vickery, a respected English journalist based in South America, shared on X: “Celtic fans might be interested to know that Bernabei is impressing in Brazil with Internacional. One journalist—unaware he’s Argentine—even thought he should be called up by Brazil.”
In response to a Celtic fan’s inquiry about Bernabei’s style of play, Vickery clarified that the full-back is playing in a very attacking role, providing two assists in the 2-0 win. Brazilian media are reporting that Celtic is demanding over £8 million to sell Bernabei, with the player’s loan deal set to expire in December. Internacional, keen to make his move permanent, are finding the transfer fee a significant hurdle. Despite this, Internacional’s executive director Andre Mazzuco has said they are working on a deal with Celtic to secure Bernabei’s services beyond the loan period.
